Chapter Thirteen

The next thing I knew, I was no longer sitting on the sofa but propped up against the pillows of the bed in Mathew’s bedroom.

Even as I blinked, my eyelids feeling less sticky than before, I heard Archer’s urgent voice, “She’s awake!”

“Thank the Goddess!” I heard a strangely familiar voice coming from the open doorway, and a moment later, Merrin appeared over me. She smiled down at me, but her expression was filled with concern.

“M...Merrin, what are you doing here?” I asked, trying to sit up, but my body betrayed me. My limbs felt as though they were encased in lead, and I could barely move my head to look at her.

My tutor looked as she always did. Her long, thick ash-blonde hair was braided and cascaded over one shoulder, her green eyes filled with compassion.

She moved to sit on the bed beside me and clutched hold of my hand.

“I’m here with Zoe for the monthly supply run,” she said softly. “And I’m glad too because I have no idea how I’d have gotten away from the academy if Joan had called me to tell me what happened.”

“Where is Zoe?” I asked, and this time I did manage to sit up. The knowledge of my friend’s presence offered a strength to my limbs that lasted only a few seconds, allowing me to prop myself up against the headboard.

Archer was sitting on a chair beside the bed, but there was no sign of Zoe, Grandma Joan or Mathew.

“She’s downstairs with her Grandma,” Merrin explained as she squeezed my hand. “They had to open up the store so not to make anything look suspicious.”

“And what about Mathew?” I asked, my heart clenching as I remembered all that had happened the night before. My eyes shot to Archer, “What have you done with him?”

“I promise I haven’t done anything,” Archer said, raising his hands as if in surrender.

“Don’t worry about Mathew.” Merrin smiled at me again. “He’s down in the basement. Last night was a real shock for him, but I’ve used a couple of spells to help him rest.”

“He didn’t know about werewolves, did he?” I groaned as I remembered how confused he’d looked after he’d shifted back into his human form.

Merrin shook her head and sighed. “Grandma Joan thought that keeping the truth from him was keeping him safe.”

“But he knew about witches?” I pointed out.

“Yes, he knew about witches.” Merrin nodded. “Zoe was determined, even against our wishes, for her family to know what was happening to her when she came to us.”

I felt a small stab of guilt at that. Maybe I should have been honest with Pete when I’d moved to the Winterwood Academy, but I couldn’t help but feel that even if I’d tried he wouldn’t have believed me.

“Don’t worry about anyone else right now,” Merrin advised softly. “You need to rest. What you did last night, though brave, was very dangerous.”:

The memory of all the elements whipping around me comforted me for a moment and I couldn’t help but smile.
