With politics

Two cheers for Democracy: one because it admits variety and two because it permits criticism.

E. M. Forster

How should society be run? Politics raises this question and, on this question, humanists are angels – metaphorical angels, of course.

We humanists do not burn books, take offence at cartoons or threaten prophets who foretell of our eternal torment in hell. We neither persecute people for their beliefs nor repress consensual sex nor insist that women be veiled in public. We issue neither death threats to challengers of humanism nor curses to those who trade in alternative religions, astral experiences or virtual realities. Considerable asymmetry exists between those with faith and us without. Those filled with faith often seek to enforce their way of life on others; we do not. We support a neutral state, a secular state – one which permits people of religion, and those of none, to live lives as they will, so long as harming no others.
