Night falls and the house grows dark and cold. The girls tug two or three blankets over them. They light the bokhari, a heater in the shape of a barrel, with a small round opening at the top for kindling.
Theyâve arranged their mats in a row, over the carpet.
Laila and Miriam find places next to each other.
When they were in America, Miriam confided in Laila about the loss of her father. Laila cried with her. Afterward, Laila vowed privately to help Miriam any way she could.
Soccer was one way. When Miriamâs shots went askew, Laila offered gentle advice.
âSome people would laugh at me for that mistake,â Miriam would say.
âI wonât, Miriam jan,â Laila replied. âNever.â
As the two try to fall asleep, they pull a shared blanket over their bodies. Beneath it, they whisper together well past midnight, remembering, wondering about their future, and about the tournament tomorrow.
