Editing Your Outline

At this point you are not editing your writing, because you have not started to write, although it might feel like you have. What you are doing is editing your outline to ensure the points contained in it reflect your skills, abilities, work experience, education and training, and other aspects of you related to the type of employment you are seeking.

While your actual resume will be a page long, it is possible that your outline will go on for two, three or more pages. That is not a problem. Remember that your goal is to create as comprehensive a resume as possible, one that you will customize and edit down to one, or perhaps two, page(s) for each job that you apply for.

With that in mind, review each point under each category and subcategory in your draft outline. What you want to do here is to make sure each point is valid and accurately portrays who you are, what you've done and can do, what you know and what you have accomplished. That means you may revise some points, you may delete some points and you may even add some points that come to mind as you are reviewing your outline. Just as when you are clustering, be open to any thoughts that come up and revise your resume outline as required based on you, what you have done, who you are and the type of employment that you are seeking.
