ASKING THE RIGHT QUESTIONS

Common journalism wisdom says there are only six questions you can ask: who, what, where, when, why and how? And yet, as part of my book research, I discovered the European Union includes a seventh question — how much? — in its writing guidelines.

Each question has many levels with increasing depth to the answers. It’s up to you to decide how far you want to take your research.

Questions challenge your thinking and the deeper you go, the chances increase that you’ll change your mind about what you think. You’ll go beyond the superficial, and sometimes abandon allegiance to beliefs you previously held to be sound. Risk uncovering new thoughts and insights and you risk discovering your old thinking to be deluded or misguided.

It may be scary, but an enquiring mind helps you to avoid potential mistakes in judgment, pushing you towards clearer thinking.
