CHAPTER FOURTEEN
MARIA BIT HER lip as she waited for the carriage to arrive at the Lyledell house. It was only a few days ago that Curtis had declared himself and scandalously imposed himself as a soon-to-be son-in-law. Her mother quickly forgave their⦠indiscretion, as soon as the proper arrangements had been made, and she hadnât stopped planning the wedding since. Of course, that the banns hadnât been read was a small detail, the only force strong enough to rein her mother in from shouting it to the world.
With a smug grin, Lady Moray met Mariaâs gaze from across the carriage. âI knew it,â she said for the thousandth time.
And truthfully, Maria had to give her that concession. She had suspected Curtisâ intentions far before she had, odd that.
As the carriage stopped in front of the grand staircase, Maria was immediately swept up into the vibrant Society that was Londonâs le bon ton. Curtis was attentive as always, his secret grins a constant delight as he would always scandalously touch her hip or caress her hand when he thought no one was watching. Or perhaps he simply didnât give a whit. How she loved him!
âCare to dance? I have it on good authority that the next song will be a waltz.â He grinned dangerously, and her insides burned with a smoldering heat.
âOf course.â And sure enough, as the music began, it was, indeed, a waltz.
âHave I told you how utterly delicious you look tonight?â Curtis spoke seductively as he pulled her in far too close.
âOnce or twice. At least this time, youâll notice what color of dress Iâm wearing,â she spoke archly.
âI always noticed,â he replied sharply, though his eyes danced. âI merely forced myself to not look too closely. A man has only so much willpower. I had to ignore you if I was to keep my sanity at all.â He smiled, all traces of his parentsâ legacy erased from his expression.
âYou did not ignore me.â Maria rolled her eyes slightly at his overreaction.
âHa! Thatâs where youâre wrong. I did, and it was very difficult to not notice how your waist is the perfect shape for my handâ¦â He squeezed his hand slightly, emphasizing his point. âOr the way your height is perfect for stealing a kissâ¦â He leaned forward as if about to attempt to do so in the middle of the ballroom.
Maria leaned back, narrowing her eyes. She didnât want to cause that much of a scandal. When they were married, that would be different. Married. In time, she would be Mrs. Curtis Sheppard. A mere sir, he wasnât titled, but never had it mattered to her. Anyway, she would much rather marry for love.
And she was certainly getting her preference!
âAfraid?â he asked, pulling her thoughts back to the present.
âOf?â
âMe?â he replied darkly.
âNo more than usual.â She bit her lip and glanced away, noticing for the first time a dark-haired beauty who looked vaguely familiar.
Curtis must have followed her gaze. âThat is Miss Beatrix Lamont.â He answered her unasked question.
