Power games and politics

Politics are an inevitable part of our lives as members of groups. All meetings will therefore involve politics of some kind. Getting things done means wielding power. Wielding power alone, of course, does not ensure that anything useful is achieved! In some cases, calling a meeting is a sign merely that somebody has acquired enough power to call a meeting. Power games and politics express tensions and shifting relationships within the group. If you chair meetings, you’ll find yourself involved in political behaviour.

You must decide how you propose to deal with it. How do you seek to influence others? What kinds of power do you have and which would you like to cultivate? How do those around you use power? How can you influence those with influence so as to align them with your objectives?
