“He’s crazy.”

I popped a bubble.

“He’s baffling and frustrating, but he likes me.”

I popped a second bubble.

You can only take so many baths, or rather, I could only take so many baths. This was what house arrest looked like when you slept with an enemy. I recognized he was one of a million enemies, so the odds had been good I’d screw someone wrong.

I slid below the water and held my breath for as long as possible.

I was going to go insane. This was worse than that damn pig farm. At least there I hadn’t had anywhere I’d wanted to go. Right now? Well, I’d tasted freedom, and I now had a new favorite toy. My body practically hummed at the idea. Bubbles floated to the top of the water as I blew out all my air. I didn’t even have my phone.

My lungs burned, forcing me to surface.

“Daddy, what would you do?”

I waited for the ideas to come to me. I could only count how many pairs of shoes I had so many damn times. I wasn’t sure how I went from killing people to running a boardroom to being forced to come home and settle for being completely bored out of my gourd.

A little cluck in the corner reminded me I wasn’t entirely alone, but I think I’d established that me and farm animals do not equal sanity or good choices.

It had felt so good to actually help when Parks was being forced into a marriage contract. I loved being helpful to Halle. It had felt like I was in control for once. When those men watched me swing that ax at their heads? The fear was for me. They were afraid of me. How had that just gone away?

Daddy never looked scared, not until I’d plunged that needle into his neck. Then he looked scared. The thrill of taking control of my own life raced up my spine. The memory of being in control and the way Roman’s hand curled around mine as he showed me just how to make that man pay for what he’d done. I’d started to think I was more of a poison kind of girl, unlike my cousin. But the way I could slide the knife and it popped through the skin, and then the fibrous texture as I cut through the muscle? Maybe I was just me, and I didn’t have a little box to fit into.

The way Roman seemed to trust me, even though he knew who I was, was a whole new feeling. My cousin had told me several times that the Demarco family was chomping at the bit to get my company. But if that were true, would Roman have trusted me with a knife?

“Daddy, if you’d only let me in on the business more, maybe I wouldn’t be so clueless.”

My thoughts slipped from confusion to the one thing I had taken for myself. Roman. His cock was huge. His hands were magic. My hand slid to my lips as I remembered the way my entire body was set on fire when his mouth touched mine.
