Ishiguro Residence, Kakunodate

Next up was the Ishiguro Residence. This was a single building without an outdoor ticket booth like Aoyagi had. Instead, you walk right in the front door and take your shoes off as you step into the main area, greeted immediately by the house’s residents — the actual descendants of the Ishiguro samurai family, who keep up the house.

The woman I’d paid admission to lead me into the main room of the house to begin a guided tour in English. The tour is incredibly informative, giving details not only on what you’re seeing, but on what the use of everything would have been in its original time and what significance it plays to the family and Japanese culture. I can’t recommend the Ishiguro house enough, as they gave such an informative and enjoyable tour of the building.
