Francis divided the sailing crew into two watches, made the navigational decisions herself, and, once the ship was running, didn’t interfere too much or get involved in too much crew management.

When she noticed conflict or anyone becoming irritable, her usual response was to move people around between watches, the very suggestion of which often sorted out any problems. When things went wrong, she would convene an immediate postmortem and try to learn from any mistakes. Her only real issues were with one member of the crew, John Tanner, a very experienced sailor whose ideas were very different to hers. Things came to a head in the Southern Ocean when, on one of Tanner’s watches, the vital spinnaker sail was badly damaged. Francis asked him to stand down as watch leader, and there was no further argument.

Francis finished fifth out of 15, which she deemed a satisfactory result. Ultimately, however, she did feel that being a woman made things harder because there were certain tasks on a large yacht that she was simply not physically strong enough to carry out by herself. This was slightly strange for someone who had crossed the Atlantic solo, but Francis was always someone who wanted to lead by example.
