10 LUST FOR LIFE: WOOING BOYS

Both Plato in classical Athens in the fourth century BCE and Theocritus in Hellenistic Alexandria in the third century BCE show the hopes and tribulations of seeking a young man’s love: overwhelming desire that causes one to blush, stammer, and compose reams of poetry in honor of the beloved. Plato’s Lysis portrays a certain man named Hippothales in a lovesick state and Socrates, who is the narrator, offering to help him do a better job of wooing his beloved, the handsome Lysis. Theocritus offers three poems (Idylls 12, 28, and 29) in the voice of besotted male lovers, as well as an account of Heracles and his love and loss of the youth Hylas (Idyll 13).
