Chapter 10

—I found my North Star.—

Hours later, Elliana looked at the short list of people she’d come up with who might hate her enough to want her dead, but everyone on the list was a stretch, all competitors. And so far it didn’t seem as if Van or Weston or anyone else at work had been targeted. Nothing that she or Theo could find.

“This list is crap,” she muttered, but took the glass of water Theo handed her as he slid onto the seat next to her.

They were on the back deck now, the sun bright in the sky, but there was enough cloud cover that it wasn’t blinding. And the water itself was a gorgeous dark blue that stretched all around them, the small waves like glittering jewels. Because of the size of the boat, it seemed to temper most of the waves because she barely felt the subtle shifting.

“I agree, because I’ve already looked into all of them.” He frowned at her screen. “What about anyone you’ve fired recently? An assistant, or someone who didn’t like working for a female boss.”

His words gave her pause, but then she shook them off. “My assistant is a woman and she’s amazing, so she’s out.”

Theo’s gaze narrowed slightly. “You paused though. I already looked into your personal assistant and I agree that she seems solid. But I saw the pause.”

“Oh, not because of her. It’s so stupid I don’t even want to bring it up.”

But Theo watched her with those tiger eyes, his muscular arm stretched out across the back of the cream-colored cushion on the bench seating as he watched her. Waited.

“Fine. A couple months ago, we—meaning, me, Van and Weston—interviewed someone for one of our executive positions. The man came highly recommended and has a lot of pertinent experience. On paper he seemed perfect. But once we got to the interview part, he only looked at Van and Weston when answering. I won’t get into the whole thing, but he acted like I was window dressing.” She lifted a shoulder because she’d dealt with subtle and not-so-subtle sexism her entire life. Hell, she’d been the only woman in her unit when she’d been in the Marines.

“You obviously didn’t hire him.” Theo’s eyes had gone flinty now, the predator come out to play.

She snorted softly. “Um, no. And he was so sure he was getting that job, acting as if it was a formality to be interviewed. Don’t get me wrong, the guy really is talented, but he was the wrong fit for our culture. Van wanted me to be the one to send him the rejection, because he’s got a little bit of petty in him too.” Elliana grinned now. “I sent out a professional, polite rejection email letting him know we were going in another direction, but we enjoyed speaking with him, blah, blah, blah, and he did not handle it well.”

“How so?”

“He responded with a snarky reply that actually surprised me. At first I thought he just reacted poorly and made a stupid decision to respond to a rejection.
