Family structure has big implications for family income. Forty-one percent of children living with single parents live below the federal poverty line, compared with 14% of children living with two married parents (Laughlin, 2014). Another major implication of living with a single parent is that the parent has less time to spend with each child because she or he must do all the household tasks alone and often must have more than one job in order to support the family. As a result, single parents are much less likely to read to their children than married parents, although they are not less likely to eat breakfast with their children (Laughlin, 2014).
