CHAPTER TWELVE

I smiled as I was handed back my anatomy paper.

Kristof leaned over and stared at my exam. “Of course, you got an A. How? You barely studied.”

I shrugged as I stuffed it into my bag. “This is all second nature to me. Science was my entire childhood.”

He slung his bag over his shoulder and his other arm around me as he pulled me out of the room. He smelled like spearmint and fresh-cut grass. I’d begun to associate the scent with comfort. “You poor thing. Didn’t you have any fun?”

I laughed and grinned up at him. “Science is fun.”

“Yeah. What was your first word? Epiphysis?” He chuckled, and I laughed again.

“No, I’m pretty sure it was ‘ball’ or something very basic.”

“Don’t try to be normal now, Quinn,” he mocked. “The jig is up.”

In the hall, someone called his name. Two guys came over. One was holding a large camera, aimed at me, while the other, a pretty guy with dark hair and tight jeans, did the talking. “Hi, I’m Roman Pozo. This is my camera guy, Ken. Ken, say hi.”

“Hey.” Ken waved but didn’t look up from the camera’s window.

Roman went on. “The first episode goes live today. We were just wondering if you had anything to say for our competitors.” A microphone seemed to appear out of nowhere and was thrust in my face.

“Huh?”

Kristof bent to my ear. “Remember? We’re doing the competition so the guys will get off your back.”

My eyes widened. I stepped out of Kris’s hold and turned on him. “You started already? I don’t remember agreeing to this.”

Kristof shrugged unapologetically. “Well, we all took a vote, and you lost.”

“We?”

“Me, Sofia, and Bree,” Kristof said. “It was unanimous.”

My mouth dropped. “But what about me?”

Incredulously, he announced, “You lost.”

“Your friends are amazing, by the way,” Roman cut in. “And naturally, they came to the right person. I’m the director. Bree has written a flawless script. Bree has been running signups. I believe we’re at two hundred already.” He wiggled his brows. “I have men working on building the obstacle courses as we speak. Sharks. Fire. Flying arrows. Anything you can name, you better believe, we’ll have it.” He put up his hands. “This will be the most dangerous show to ever hit television. Kiss of Fire.”

“Television?”

“Well, it will be spell coded, naturally.” He winked. “For Society eyes only.” He thrust the mic back into my face. “So, what do you have to say to the two hundred men who will be competing for a place on your team?”

“Two hundred…” Flabbergasted, I said, “Get a hobby.”

Roman laughed and turned to Ken. “Cut the camera. We’ll just use the image and dub her saying something else. Bree already said we might have to. Let’s go.” Ken bowed and then left.

I swung on Kristof and caught him in the arm. “I can’t believe you went behind my back.”

He held up his hands. “Hey, we’re doing this for you. Your house was blown up last night. What did you expect us to do? Come to class and act like it was business and usual?”

I blinked.
