CHAPTER FOURTEEN—Miranda

As Miranda began to strip down to her skin, she glanced at Elijah, busy at the same task, and wondered if it would ever feel normal—any part of the transformation process. The actual transformation, she’d been assured, would always feel at least a little weird. It was hard to feel normal when your bones were rearranging themselves inside of you and emerging through your body to form new shapes. But getting naked, being naked in front of people she barely knew? Would that become normal to her, the way it seemed to be for all of the dragons who’d grown up knowing about their abilities, practicing them?

She caught Elijah glancing at her as well and turned away, smiling to herself. Miranda stretched, rotating her head against her neck and shoulders, lifting her arms over her head, making the most of her svelte body for her somewhat attentive audience. As far as she could tell, it was only her and Elijah in the area—he’d driven past the point of country roads, even, onto a dirt access strip, alongside a field and into a forest to a clearing. The closest house was, as far as Miranda could tell, at least five miles away from them.

“Ready?” Elijah asked her, and Miranda turned to face him, still smiling. She didn’t miss the parts of her body where Elijah’s gaze lingered: her breasts, her hips, and of course, the area where her thighs met.

“As ready as I can ever be,” Miranda said. Elijah took a few steps further back from her, giving them both space for their final forms, and Miranda focused her attention on the process of transforming. Whatever ultimate goals she might have, the chance to exist in her other form, to fly and feel the power of her draconic body, was more important. Cami had taken that away from her, even if it had only been temporarily, and Miranda reminded herself that she was going to make the official Keane heir pay. Miranda took a deep breath and exhaled slowly, calling upon the energy flowing through her, the essence that proximity to her own kind, finally, had awakened.

She groaned as the change began to ripple through her body, vibrating through her bones. It wasn’t exactly painful—the sensation was something even more overwhelming than mere pain, something completely alien to a human mind’s experience. Miranda bent forward at the waist as the change continued, faster than it had been on her first “public” transformation. Miranda had had several chances to enjoy her other form since then, and every time she’d changed from human to dragon and back again, it had gotten easier. But it remained an ordeal, feeling every bone in her body shift, move, change its shape, her skeleton growing outward.

Her senses changed, her eyes growing larger and taking in new colors that she couldn’t fully see as a human while her hearing grew more distinct. Even her brain seemed to change in ways that Miranda could never have described to
