Chapter Fourteen

Eric

I might as well be skipping math class Monday morning. My body is here, but my brain isn’t. The only thing on my mind is what happened at band practice this weekend. The way the guys, Katie, and I gelled together. It’s like we’ve been a band for years. Katie fit right in. Sure she might not have the look of a rock girl, but her voice mixed in with our music? Fireworks. And when she and I sang the song I composed with Ethan? Chills ran up and down my spine. That rarely happens to me. She’s just…she’s something special and we’re lucky to have her.

“Eric Palmer,” the teacher says as she walks across the front of the room, hands on her hips. Her hair is tied into a high bun, which doesn’t look at all comfortable, and she’s scowling like someone stole her precious math textbook.

I blink. “Yeah?”

She gestures around. “Everyone has cleared their desks in preparation for the pop quiz. Yet your desk is not cleared.”

I glance down at my desk. Sure enough, all my school crap is piled on there. “Pop quiz? I didn’t know about a quiz.”

A few kids chuckle.

“That’s the idea of a pop quiz, Mr. Palmer,” the teacher says. “You’re not meant to be aware of it. But I do except you to be prepared. Are you?” She motions toward my desk.

I normally do well in school. Not the greatest, but I’m an okay student. But I’ve been so distracted with the band that I forgot to study.

“Mr. Palmer, I won’t ask you again. Clear your desk.”

Once my desk passes inspection, she hands each student a piece of paper, then instructs us to begin. It’s not so bad, and I find myself remembering most of the material. I empty my mind of anything band-related and focus on this quiz. Even though I want to be a musician and have no plans to go to college, Mom wants me to do well. After everything she’s been through with Dad, I don’t want to add stress to her pile. Ethan and I both decided to make her as happy as we can. He doesn’t care about his schoolwork and just wants to graduate high school so he could play football for a college team. I told him he needs those good grades in order to actually get into a good college, but he insists that his football skills will be enough.

When we were younger and just started the band, I thought we’d go on tour together, just like Dad. But now that he’s all caught up in football, what exactly is going to happen to us? I’ll be on tour while he’ll be playing for a college team?

I don’t like thinking about the future and what will happen after high school, so I usually shove it to the back of my mind. But it creeps up on me every so often.

The bell rings and the teacher collects the quizzes. I managed to fill in the answers, though I have no idea if anything I wrote was right.
