* * *

It was worse—so much worse than even Willow had imagined. They had all really turned their backs on him—Trent literally, as he turned away from where Luke walked out the door to slide onto the bar stool he’d vacated.

“What are you doing?” she asked.

“I’m joining you,” Trent said.

“I didn’t invite you,” she pointed out. And she didn’t want to talk to him. But she had to...if she was going to find out the truth.

And she needed to know the truth. She wasn’t the only one, though. Everybody needed to know or they would continue blaming Luke for Dirk’s death, for the hit-and-run involving Owen and Courtney.

And they were all he had now that she’d thrown him out. Guilt churned in her stomach as the baby moved within her womb. She pressed her hand over it protectively. While she’d been afraid to go to her obstetrician yet, afraid of finding out something was wrong with this pregnancy, she had been taking prenatal vitamins. She’d been taking care of herself and him or her, except for the stress. And that was what had cost her those other babies. She could not lose this one.

Maybe Luke was right. Maybe she needed to stay out of this and away from him. That was obviously what he’d intended when he’d walked out and left her alone in the bar. He’d made the message as clear to everyone else as it had been to her earlier at their home: they were done.

They had no future.

But she still wanted Luke to have one, doing the job he’d once loved so much. Probably more than he’d ever loved her...

But how could he love her after what she’d done? After how she’d blamed him for their losses, for their pain?

Sure, she had been stressed over his job, when his crew had gone missing and when the arsonist had been after all of them. But she should have been able to cope better, to protect her babies herself.

But she was no stronger than her mother had been, no more able to handle the stress of being married to a man with a dangerous career.

“I thought you and I were friends, Willow,” Trent said.

She knew he’d always wanted more than friendship from her. How badly had he wanted it? How badly had he wanted her?

Enough to try to get her husband out of the way?

Dread lurched in her stomach now, and she pushed away the plate of food Charlie had given her. She understood what Luke had meant, about hating having to suspect everyone. But it really was the only way to stay safe.

For him...

Was she in danger as well?

Someone had slashed her tires. She lifted her purse from the counter and felt reassured with the weight of the gun inside it. She had protection.

What did Luke have, as he walked back to the firehouse alone? What if someone tried to run him down like they’d run down Owen and Courtney? She glanced around the bar to see if anyone might have followed Luke out.
