CHAPTER TWENTY-FIVE
Tuesday, April 22, 10:00 a.m.
I checked out the news before going to sleep, but there was no mention of names in the news story about Chrisâs shooting, since the boys were minors. I felt like the actual shooter was older, smarter, and he had slipped past the policeâs radar. As I drifted off to sleep, the red jacket drifted into my dreams, along with snakes.
I slept and slept. I probably had the best sleep Iâd had in a long time, because Monday had been such a full day. I wouldâve kept on sleeping if the doorbell hadnât rung. I stumbled out of bed and nearly stepped on Callie. The feline took off in the other direction, hissing. I had given up on the idea of throwing her out of my bedroom, which used to be Aunt Câs bedroom.
For some reason, Bev standing at my front door was not that much of a surprise to me. I opened the door and glared at her. âI sure hope this is good, because I was sleeping. In fact, I would say thatâs the best sleep Iâve had since I got here.â
Bev walked past me like she couldnât care less that for once I had had a full nightâs sleep. She was dressed in jeans and a T-shirt. I looked at her attire.
âArenât you supposed to be back at work this week?â I asked.
Bev sat down on the couch. âI had to take the day off and get Mama to the doctor.â
I grimaced. âIs she okay?â
âYes, it was her annual checkup. She was okay, but very stressed. She didnât tell me until we got back to the house that she received a notice from the county code inspector. Mama is going to get a heavy-duty fine by the end of the month if she doesnât clean up her place.â
Well, that shut down my rant about losing sleep. Bev had warned me. I sat down in the chair across from the couch. âWhat are we going to do?â
Bev threw her hands up in the air. âWe need to get her place cleaned up.â
âHow are we going to manage that feat? I didnât get past all the mess that should have been the living room. The furniture was buried in that room.â
Bev crossed her arms. âI hired an organizer and a professional cleaning crew to come by and help us on Thursday.â
âThursday?â
âThis is serious, Serena.â
âI know that, but thatâs two days away.â I sank down on the chair. Iâd seen hoarding incidents before, but this was my own family, the woman who gave birth to me. âIs Mama going to cooperate?â
âShe says she wants help, but she could change her mind. She has before.â
I raised my eyebrows. âYou tried this before? Great!â
âI tried to do this last fall, but she backed out after the organizer showed up at the house. She needs help, Serena. She has for a long time. I believe my dad was holding her together. When he died, she just let things go.
