Planting Cash Crops

When I was growing up during the 1940s and 1950s, cash crops provided an important supplement to the regular farm income from milk and hog sales. In central Wisconsin, farm families generally grew potatoes, cucumbers, and green beans as cash crops. From settlement days into the 1950s, growing potatoes offered extra income to usually cash-strapped farmers. Cucumbers and green beans came later. Farmers in western Wisconsin, especially Vernon County, and in the southern counties of Dane and Rock grew tobacco as a cash crop.

Tobacco fields like this one (circa 1874) were a common sight in parts of southern and southwestern Wisconsin.
