SEVENTEEN

That night, Hogton and Gage patrolled the streets of Ashwood in separate patrol cars. Rather, Hogton patrolled the streets, not knowing he was the only one. Gage was across town at the Westside Estates Trailer Park, getting blown by a three-toothed meth head named—Nicole? Rachel? Mandy? Shit, he couldn’t remember. Not that it mattered anyway. As long as she sucked and sucked well and took his nut, he didn’t care if her name was Joan of Arc of Latter-Christ Saint Holmes.

As she sucked, Gage held up a bag of ice he’d swiped from some mullet-headed redneck on the other end of the trailer park, taken under threat of jail time. Meth was the only form of payment whatever-her-name-is took. Well, that and cash, but Gage wasn’t about to part with his hard-earned money.

“Squeeze my balls!” Gage said, and the woman obliged, squeezing gently while massaging his taint with her middle finger, coaxing his orgasm ever forward.

He popped in a few minutes, his jizz coming thick and sticky like toothpaste. The woman swallowed every bit of the viscous fluid, then continued sucking on Gage’s sensitive pecker to get every last drop. That drove Gage wild. Though not religiously inclined, her doing it made him see the face of God every time.

Once drained, Gage holstered his dick and pulled his pants up. He tossed the bag of ice at the woman, who scrambled and caught it as though it were her source of life, which, in a way, it was. Gage said nothing as he exited the trailer, walked back to his cruiser, hopped in, and headed back to the police station.

Hogton took a huge bite of the triple-meat burger he’d bought at a gas station earlier that night. A brownish blend of mustard and barbeque sauce dripped onto his bulbous gut. Hogton looked at it, shrugged, and took another huge bite as he turned down a street whose name he didn’t know off-hand. He swallowed the bite, then yawned wide enough to make his jaw pop.

Hogton hated working the overnight shift. He hadn’t worked it since he was a rookie—seven years ago—and was happy as hell when he was finally taken off it, when Gage arrived and wanted to work overnights.

Hogton turned a corner, cursing when a pickle slid from his burger and landed next to the sauce stain. Screw this, he thought, and pulled over to the side of the road. He braked and threw the car into park, keeping his foot on the brake: a habit he’d never broken. A green field covered in darkness sat to his left while the woods hung out on his right, the trees standing monstrous against the night sky. Hogton removed his gun from its holster and set it on his lap. Even though he doubted the animal would bother with him—he didn’t have a pussy and didn’t have a woman with him—he wanted to be ready just in case. He switched the overhead lights on, eating his burger while looking at the red, white, and blue shadows dancing around him.
