Chapter Ten

It wasn’t as if it was the first time he’d woken up in the same bed as Kellan, but this time was different. One, he was embarrassed as hell at just how badly he had lost control last night, in every possible way from his temper tantrum to the profound sobbing mess. Two, the bond between them had changed. He’d been fighting so hard against developing an attachment, because he assumed it had no future. It wasn’t like any relationship came with a guarantee but this felt like he had hope.

Phin lay on his belly, head turned toward Kellan. Kellan had an arm over Phin’s back, as if in sleep he needed to be sure Phin was anchored beside him. Kellan kept the blackout shutters on the window set to not quite fully closed. When the sun came up in the morning, it let a small percentage of light into the room.

He lay there looking at Kellan. All that heavy muscle, relaxed in sleep, the angle of his jawline shadowed in stubble, the cheek bones, the strong nose, and that mouth. His brain ran through the variety of expressions he had come to associate with this man. The stern tight one, the one that meant he was worried and determined not to say anything, and there was the rare full smile that made Phin feel like the sun was peeking through the clouds. And so many more.

Kellan opened his eyes a slit and reached out to drag Phin against him. “You okay?” His voice was a low, husky, barely awake rumble.

“Uh-huh.”

One hand behind Phin’s head, Kellan kissed him, a long slow meeting of lips and tongues and teeth. Eventually, Kellan tilted his head back. “I think we are in need of a morning totally alone.”

Even though a warm thread of arousal had crept through Phin, there was guilt, on many levels. “We can’t… My body probably can’t handle…and I have a meeting …”

Kellan pressed a finger to Phin’s mouth, silencing him. “There are lots of safe things. And I think you’re pushing too damn hard, too fast anyway. You only spent one real day recovering after they let you out of the hospital. You could really use a slow morning. I could use a morning where I don’t spend it worrying about the fact you’re out of my sight.”

Phin pulled Kellan’s finger away. “You worry when you can’t see me?”

“There was an assassination attempt on you.” Kellan laid his hand on Phin’s chest. “All other grief aside, it scares the hell out of me that someone tried to kill you.”

“We don’t know for sure that I was the target.”

“We also don’t know that you weren’t. That was the shuttle you were due to get on. Iman’s been sending me little snips of rumors and info on top of what royal intelligence people have communicated to me so far. But this is supposed to be a time for you to relax, and we’re straying into the danger and politics zone. I’m going to send Kane a message okay?”

“Okay.
