Chapter 12
Lizzie woke up to the sound of soft snoring coming from underneath her. She suddenly felt very hot and self-conscious,she raised her body and looked up at Mr Darcyâs sleeping form. He looked so much younger when he was asleep, it took her breath away to see him so peaceful.
She reached up her hand to touch his growing stubble, delighting in the feeling of it pricking at her fingertips. She was examining his chest and the way the fabric stretched over his muscles, when she heard him yawn and jolt awake. âI thought I was dreamingâ he said to her sleepily
âDisappointed?â she arched an eyebrow at him
âHardlyâ he touched her cheek with his thumb, and brought her in for a kiss. He knew he needed to pull away and head towards his bedroom if they did not wish to cause a scandal, but with Elizabeth nestled so happily against him he could barely bring himself to care.
âBreakfastâ Lizzie said with a smile âwe must be ready for breakfast or Georgie shall miss usâ
âYou are a very wise womanâ he said with a groan, and stood up to fetch his boots
He shot one last lustful look at her before shaking his head and walking back to his room.
Elizabeth got down for breakfast and was greeted by her uncle and aunt, who sat eating with Georgiana. Mr Darcy was nowhere in sight.
âWe are heading out to meet with a few friends, Lizzie, would you like to accompany us?â
She in fact would rather stay, but she hadnât been out with her family yet, and it would not do for the people of Lambton to believe she thought herself above them, so she agreed to the outing.
They first visited a couple of cousins from Mrs Gardiner who owned a bookshop, and although they hadnât seen each other in years the primary focus of their conversation was Pemberley and its master. Lizzie took the opportunity to purchase a few books, she blushed at the thought of Mr Darcy reading them for her.
They went on to visit an old childhood friend of her aunt, who was a tenant at a nearby estate. The woman was very amiable, she had seven children and a very happy disposition. Her house was clean and tidy, and she had a babe on her lap for the whole of their stay.
When Lizzie returned to the house she decided to go on a walk before dinner, hoping it would calm her nerves, she was very anxious about seeing Mr Darcy after spending the entire night with him.
She was startled at hearing the altered voice of colonel Fitzwiliam coming from a bend on the road. âYou can not propose to that woman Darcy, listen to yourselfâ
âIn all of your discourse you have given me not a single valid reason why I can notâ came Mr Darcyâs passionate reply
âWell then if you will not listen to my opposition to her fortune and station, will you at least acknowledge your agreement to marry Anne?â
