CHAPTER EIGHTEEN

They kept her overnight for observation. Although she hated hospitals with a passion, she knew she had been pretty banged up and they needed to make sure she was okay. And what about Max’s condition? She didn’t object. She stayed overnight. But the next day, after running every test they could think up, they let her go.

But all she wanted was to find Max.

Last night, after she was awakened in the hospital ER and was told by a nurse that some drunk driver had almost run her over, she asked about him. But nobody knew anything about that. He was the one who was in that parking lot with her, she told them. He probably came in another ambulance right along with her. But they still had no knowledge of who she was talking about.

Knowing she wasn’t crazy, later that night, while she was supposedly under observation in the ICU, she did her own look around. But she wasn’t able to leave the floor. The charge nurse saw to that. But she looked into room after room, finding no Max. Until the nurse had had enough and she was escorted back to her bed.

But she couldn’t sleep. What happened to Max??? Her anxiety level was through the roof. He couldn’t have disappeared off the face of this earth! If she was in the ER at the only hospital in Marimar, and he was in the path of that out-of-control speeding car, surely he would have been in ICU with her.

Or, she didn’t realize until early the next morning, maybe he wasn’t in ICU because he didn’t make it. Maybe he had died?

She refused to believe that. That could not be true! Maybe they put him on a private floor after they found out he was rich. Maybe they airlifted him to a better hospital. She didn’t know. But after they released her, she wasn’t leaving that hospital until she found out.

She grabbed what she came with, which were the clothes on her back, checking to see if those cops or hospital staff stole her cell phone or all that money Max had given to her. When she saw that her phone and the money were all there, or at least the money felt like it was all there since she didn’t get a chance to fully count it, she took off. She had to find Max.

But she found out nothing. She went from floor to floor, pretending to be his niece, but nobody had any knowledge of him.

Then a thought occurred to her. The nursing staff was under strict confidentiality requirements. They weren’t telling her shit. But the janitorial staff wasn’t going to treat gossip the same way. Because if they were anything like the janitors and maids she’d known in the past, they loved to tell the news.

She went out back, where they took their cigarette breaks, but only found two people on break. A white man, who was smoking while texting furiously on his cell phone, and a black lady, further over, sitting on the bench.
