Chapter 10

The next day, after coming from the gym, Javo got dressed and headed over to his mama’s apartment, so they could head over to the cemetery to visit Germaine Jr.

When he walked through the door, Germaine was sitting on the couch watching TV. Germaine didn’t bother to look in Javo’s direction, but Javo wasn’t surprised. Every time he came around, he didn’t really acknowledge him.

Javo hated it, but there was nothing that he could do about it.

Although Germaine didn’t speak to him, Javo was raised to be respectful and taught that any time you walked into a room full of people, you made sure your ass spoke, so that’s what he did.

“Hey, Pops,” he said in a low tone.

Hey,” Germaine dryly replied without even glancing at his son.

Moments later, Rochelle walked out of her bedroom and into the living room. When she saw Javo, her face lit up.

“I’m so glad you came,” she said as she approached him with open arms.

“Come on now, Mama. Have I ever missed something as important as this?” Javo asked with a smile on his face while hugging his mama.

During their embrace, Germaine sighed. He felt like it should’ve been Germaine Jr standing in the living room hugging his wife. He couldn’t help but feel fucked up inside because the love that should’ve been for his son, Rochelle was giving it to Javo.

After Rochelle pulled away from Javo, she looked at her husband and sighed. She was also in her feelings because he refused to come to the cemetery every time she asked. It had been thirty years since Germaine Jr passed, but that didn’t mean they were supposed to forget and not visit him at all.

“Baby, you know it ain’t gon’ kill you to go with us,” Rochelle said, still staring at her husband.

“I told you I’m good.”

Javo shook his head because he didn’t agree with the way his father was dealing with everything. Ever since he was a child, he remembered him only being bitter and distant.

“Pops, the cemetery is right up the street. It’s nothin’ to go with me and Mama,” Javo stated.

Germaine looked up at Javo and tilted his head as if he was confused. He didn’t understand why the hell Javo was even commenting on something that didn’t concern him.

“Like I said… I’m good,” Germaine replied with an attitude.

He then got up from the couch, brushed past Javo like he was absolutely nothing, and headed down the hall toward the bedroom.

It was taking everything in Javo not to explode on his father. He took a deep breath and held it, hoping that it would stop his eyes from swelling up.

“Hey, don’t let that get to you. You know how your father is,” Rochelle said as she caressed her son’s back.

“So, just cause that’s how he is means I gotta accept it?” Javo asked, trying to keep his temper in check.

“No, baby, that’s not what I’m saying. I just don’t want you to let it get to you.”

Rochelle didn’t like the tension that Germaine had created between him and Javo because it hurt.
