Chapter Seven

CHANCE

Since Skylar’s edible episode, I’d steered clear of her. The entire day was just stressful. Instead of focusing on that, I paid attention to my own reality. I hadn’t been to the frat house since Zaïre and I almost came to blows. I’d become a hermit, hiding in despair. Every day was filled with more drama. If it wasn’t my breakup, it was this baby. Every other second, Nicole was calling me, asking for a favor. I told her ass I wanted to be involved each step of the way. I had no idea she would take that to mean she had free reign to call me all times of the day and night. Shorty was a bug. I got calls every time she had a craving or a pain. It had only been about a month since I found out. It felt like the longest thirty days of all time. I couldn’t wait to be done with her. I was finally getting a break today.

Today was officially the beginning of Thanksgiving break. I had at least five days to get away from everything and everybody. I was supposed to go to mine and my brothers’ actual property, but I no longer wanted to. I just wanted to be alone in the silence. I needed space to clear my head. I had never been overwhelmed before. I was like a duck. I just let things slide right off my back. But for some reason, I couldn’t shake my feelings off now. I’d been having headaches off and on for weeks. Something had to give.

Me, Jason, and LJ owned a few properties in the city, but no one knew we actually rested our heads in Palos Hills. Not even Skylar. When I came back home from New York, my brother demanded that LJ and I started investing our money into real estate. Something that was sure and legal. Lil Steve’s dad had put him on game. He was making money hand over fist in the market. It was something we could do that was legit and lucrative.

We owned a twenty-two-unit apartment complex on the southside—LJ handled all the day-to-day operations for that business—our home, a laundromat, and some land out west. We were set for life.

I got up early this morning to get myself together. I never scheduled morning classes, so I wasn’t used to waking up at eight. But today, I had to meet with my coach before I left campus for break. He was hounding me about seeing potential in me and I did not understand why. I knew I was smart and a good player, but I never wanted to play basketball professionally. My path was already set in stone. I was an heir to the Sinclair throne, and I wasn’t giving that up for a sport.

Silently, I showered and ate a bowl of cereal at my kitchen table. As I sat there, my mind drifted to the first day Skylar made me breakfast.
