Needs
Ask yourself: What are some of the things a home absolutely must have if youâre going to spend hundreds of thousands of dollars on it and live there for at least the next few years of your life? What are the deal breakers that you simply canât live without?
This list will be different for everyone, depending on your lifestyle and future plans, but it boils down to your most basic demands. The bottom line is this: If you canât buy a home that has these features, then youâd just as soon rent a place that does and not buy a home at all.
For example, you would probably love a home with a stylish, remodeled kitchen plucked from the pages of an interior design magazine. Is that a must-have? Likely not. But a dishwasher? That might be a must-have. Ditto an eat-in kitchen.
Here are some examples of needs or must-haves:
Work from home? You might view an officeâor at least some kind of workspace, such as an upstairs landing with room for a deskâas essential.
Have kids, or plan to? Maybe three bedrooms is the absolute minimum youâd consider. If you have a toddler, a bathtub may be mandatory; a family with teens, meanwhile, may insist on having at least two bathrooms.
Got a dog? You may limit your search to homes with fenced-in yards, and condo buyers will need to look exclusively at pet-friendly buildings.
Do you have aging parents or close family members who visit from out of state? Maybe you need a guest space with its own bath.
Are you an artist or woodworker? Perhaps you need some kind of spaceâwhether itâs a garage, shed, attic, or basementâfor a studio or workshop.
After living in a downtown apartment and battling for street parking every day, maybe a driveway or dedicated garage spot is at the top of your must-have list.
Having spent months trapped at home during COVID lockdowns, perhaps youâre now unwilling to consider a home without some kind of private outdoor spaceâwhether itâs a yard, patio, or porch.
