Lacey got into his car after he’d showered and changed. The rest of the day had been good, and he hadn’t had another incident with any men who wanted to wink at him. The guests seemed nice, and there was even a child around the age of seven who kept asking to see horses.

From what Henry had told him, later Owen would start a campfire and tell stories and sing songs for the guests. Tomorrow, Keene and Damien would show the guests how to rope a calf, take them horseback riding on a trail, and have a big dinner out back.

Lacey was excited to be a part of that, because Holton had asked if he would. Not only were the guests getting the whole “ranch life” experience but so was Lacey. Only he was getting a head start on the horseback riding.

He headed down the driveway and made a left, which would take him to Diamond Ranch, which was off-limits to the guests. That was where the real work got done, and no one wanted any guests wandering around or possibly getting hurt.

Lacey liked that they wanted to keep part of their lives private. He knew how that felt. He’d been the same way, until he’d finally opened up about Klein. Truthfully, telling Holton everything had felt therapeutic, like a heavy burden had been lifted from his shoulders.

When he saw his parents again, Lacey would tell them everything. He was no longer hiding that part of his life. He was no longer ashamed that he’d stayed so long. It was Klein that needed to be ashamed of his actions.

Lacey frowned when he tried to slow down, but the car kept going at the same speed. He pumped the brakes a few times, hoping that would help, but it didn’t.

He gripped the wheel so hard that his knuckles turned white. He flew past the entrance to the ranch, and now the road had turned into a downward incline. His car picked up speed. He’d noticed the brakes had been a little wonky earlier, but it was an old car, so Lacey hadn’t thought anything of it.

Now he wished he’d paid more attention. The road was winding, and the only thing stopping him from going over the edge was a guardrail. Lacey’s car slid into it, and he heard metal on metal, but thank god the railing held because on the other side was a steep drop-off.

When he saw another car coming toward him on the opposite side of the road, Lacey laid into his horn as warning. The other car’s tires screeched as it swerved away from Lacey, the driver honking his own horn as if Lacey had tried to plow into him on purpose.

He had to figure out a way to stop his car. He had no idea how to do that without crashing. Lacey kept pumping his brakes with no results. Finally, he looked down and saw the parking brake. Lacey grabbed it and pulled with all his might.
