JAKE DIDN’T WANT TO crawl out of bed when the alarm went off at six. He wanted to stick his head under the pillow and catch a couple more hours of sleep. The whole group –Kyle included – had stayed at the restaurant until they’d basically been tossed out. And then he and Wendy had talked on the phone until the wee hours of the morning.

She’d been so excited to have her son home and sleeping under the same roof, but he’d gone to bed in a snit. After Sara got married, Wendy started using her old room for storage, so Mark’s was the only other bed. That meant Abby would be sleeping over at Sara and Ryan’s house while they were in town, and Mark wasn’t happy. Abby, on the other hand, didn’t have a problem with it, admitting her parent’s wouldn’t have allowed them to share a room either.

Lying in the dark, staring up at the ceiling he couldn’t see, Jake wished he could turn back time. Memories of him and the kids helping Wendy get the turkey in the oven, then sitting around the television watching the Thanksgiving parade with them came to mind. After Mark turned sixteen though, parades weren’t cool anymore, so it had just been him and Wendy for the past several years. Not that he minded being alone with her, he just missed the kids being younger.

With a grunt, he flung the covers back and stumbled down the hall to the bathroom, smiling when he remembered part of his conversation with Wendy the night before.

“Are you in bed now?” she’d asked softly, her voice low and throaty.

“It’s one in the morning, sweetheart. Of course I’m in bed.”

“Do you have any idea how crazy that drives me?”

“Why?” he’d wanted to know, But he knew because the thought of her being in bed two driveways away wasn’t doing much for his peace of mind either.

“Because you told me what you sleep in. Or...um...more precisely what you don’t sleep in, and every time I imagine you lying in bed, I imagine more than I probably ought to.”

“Oh.”

He loved the thought that she wanted him as much as he wanted her, but sometimes he wished she wouldn’t be quite so honest about it. Especially since he was lying in bed exactly as she was imagining him, listening to the sound of her voice, his arms aching because he wanted to be holding her instead of his cell phone.

He knew where he intended their relationship to go, but she’d had enough trouble adjusting to the thought of simply dating him. He didn’t know what she might do if he brought marriage into the picture this early.

And so he would call on every bit of patience he could call up and continue to take it slow. For now though, he was going to slip into a pair of faded jeans, a black tee shirt, and a white sweater. And then he was going to go next door, give a twenty-six pound turkey a bath, wait for Wendy to stuff it, then muscle it into the oven.
