Somehow, orchestrating the late night picnic surprise for Brian and Brianna made Wednesday morning a little easier for Tracey. She cared for them deeply, there should be no doubting that. Her loyalty stood with them one thousand percent.

So she possessed zero guilt when, two hours after driving Brianna to school, she sat on a stool in the kitchen and pulled out her cell phone to call Kyle’s mother, Celeste Addison.

“Ms. Celeste, how are you doing?”

“As well as I can be, and better than I deserve, I guess.” Celeste sighed. “Thinking about all the good times. All the years when things weren’t like this.”

This was hard. “How is Judge Addison today?”

“He’s going to stay in the hospital for now. He’s receiving help with his swallowing and breathing. His medical team has made him comfortable, and I’ll stay by his side. There’s not much I need to do while he’s here.”

Finding the right words in these types of situations? Difficult. The Addison’s had walked with the Lord for a long time. Ms. Celeste must be leaning on her faith during this season.

“He’s a fighter, Ms. Celeste,” Tracey said. “We’re all praying, and I know he’s fighting.”

“Yes, yes. He is determined to hang on and stay with us a while longer, but if he doesn’t, I’ll know it’s his season to meet his Lord. Today though, the care he’s getting is excellent, and the Lord is definitely providing for both of us. That’s my testimony.”

“Powerful testimony.”

“Yes, indeed,” Celeste said. “And I heard congratulations are in order, mommy.”

Tracey smiled. “Tyler told you.”

“It’s been awhile since I’ve been around a newborn, so please don’t make yourself a stranger after the baby is born. I’d love to see your whole family.”

Visiting the Addison home. Tracey avoided it since the whole debacle a few years ago, even though she adored Kyle’s parents. Stupid, complicated relationships. Tracey had witnessed the hardness in Brian’s face that evening at Talula's Garden. He managed to say it without saying it: Kyle, Celeste, Judge Addison…that’s Tyler’s family, not yours. Pray for them and leave them alone. But Tracey couldn’t do that. And now, with Judge Addison’s time on earth possibly ending shortly, it was inevitable she’d interact with the family again. She’d have to figure out a way to get Brian on board without him thinking there was more to it.

“I would love to come see you soon,” Tracey said. “How is Kyle doing, by the way?”

“Actually, he just left here a few minutes before you called. He’s working with some new clients. But since we brought my husband here, Kyle has been here with me every night like clockwork. Some evenings he even comes with me to pray in the chapel.”

“Kyle? In the chapel?”

Celeste gave a low chuckle. “I know. I always said it would take an act of God to get him to come to church on his own. Maybe this is it? If it is, I’ll take it.”

“Ms. Celeste, is there anything I can do? Special prayers?”

“I really do have everything I need, but please pray for Kyle.
