The battalion aid station is swamped. Our physician, Dr Nikolaus Frank, works without respite. The companies need reinforcement and ammunition desperately. The last reserves, the pioneer platoon and the pack animal tenders, have been thrown into the fighting.

SS tenacity won the day, and with the help of the newly-arrived Recce Battalion the Partisans were sent reeling back. Their attempt to overwhelm an isolated Handschar force had failed – this time. However there was ample warning for the division in the fighting at Vlasenica and Sekovilci. The need, dictated by the ground, to disperse forces and the problem with rapid regrouping and reinforcement meant that potential disaster was always a possibility. The key to avoiding it was steadfastness in defence of the sub-units under assault and the ability to regroup and quickly intervene with flying columns from the rest of the division. This saved the day during Maypole and led to the success of the operation, it was officially declared over on 6 May. The Partisans lost some 956 men killed and a further 96 taken prisoner. With a casualty rate of some 10 per cent the III Bosnia Corps had not only failed in its mission to move substantial forces across the Drina River to support their comrades in western Serbia, but had also been badly mauled itself. It would need several weeks to recoup and recover before it could again engage in large scale operations.
