Pucheu: I have done what had to be done, being fully aware of the responsibilities of my position as Minister of the Interior. I could not and should not allow the shooting of forty good Frenchmen (a reference to the war veterans apparently removed from the original German list for execution).

Romier: But how on earth did you get involved? How could you, yourself, nominate the hostages?

Pucheu: I didn’t nominate them. All I did was allow the Germans to replace the original list with a new one.

Romier: You didn’t have the right to do that, my poor friend. Whether they were war veterans or communists, they were all good Frenchmen. You didn’t have to make a choice between them. You didn’t have to take sides. The Germans had to be made to take responsibility for this massacre. You, now, share that responsibility with them. How come you didn’t see all this?
