LUPERÓN BAY

Named for Gregorio Luperón, this embayment on the north coast of the country was the site of an attempted exile invasion against the regime of Rafael Trujillo, which took place on 14 June 1949. A group of Dominican exiles and members of the antidictatorial Caribbean Legion trained in Guatemala and flew from Cozumel in seaplanes; only one made it to Luperón, about 50 km (24 mi.) west of Puerto Plata. They were met with overwhelming military power; of the 15 men aboard, 10 died in the attempt. Set on one of the few bays offering refuge from hurricanes and other storms, today the town of Luperón is a small tourism enclave popular with boaters.
