Kay answered her door with a concerned look on her face, but when I saw her face, my concern matched hers.

“Zavion, y’all fighting again? She put her hands on you again?” Kay fired off questions before I could even get through the door.

“Damn, Kay, can I come in first?” I walked past her and flopped down on her sofa. Kay’s blanket was spread across the sofa like she was laying there. A bottle of ginger ale and a sleeve of saltine crackers were on the coffee table.

“What’s wrong, Zavion? You look like a guilty puppy.” Kay came, grabbed her blanket, and sat next to me.

“I had a fucked up day.” I tossed my head back on the sofa, thinking about the events that had taken place today. After leaving Nat’s office, I went to class late and was not able to focus on a thing being taught. It felt like I went through the rest of the day on autopilot. I dropped off the pills, picked Zavia up from school, and stayed with her at home until Ericka got off from work. I couldn’t even look Ericka in her eyes or put my lips on her. I hugged my baby girl and left. I drove around for a little bit before pulling up on Kay.

“Do you want to talk about it?” Kay asked. I shook my head without looking at her.

“You wanna tell me what’s wrong with you? You look sick and you're in here drinking Black folks medicine and crackers. All you need is Jerry Springer and you’ll officially be sick.” We laughed.

“You stupid, my stomach has just been bothering me today.”

“You got the shits?” I looked up at her. “I’m not tryna be shitting and throwing up all day messing around with you, Kay.”

“No, crazy, just super nausea and upset stomach.” She lay back, rubbing her stomach.

I sat up and looked at her. “Damn, you got my niece or nephew in there.” I rubbed her stomach, chuckling when she slapped my hand away.

“Don’t play, Zavion. I’m not pregnant. I must have just eaten something bad or had a little stomach bug.”

“Yeah, a bug that’ll be a baby in nine months.”

She glared at me and I laughed again before settling down. I felt my phone vibrate in my pocket. Reaching for it, I saw Ericka texting me.
