Chapter Nineteen

Ramiro couldn’t escape the scrutiny of Evie’s gaze. It was as if she sensed he’d held back, and the thought almost made him laugh. He’d shared more with her than he ever had anyone else. Some of it wasn’t personal, like when he’d told her about Reed and about Reed’s wife and kids, about the job. But then when Evie asked Ramiro if he was ever afraid, he’d said yes. She knew he liked his pancakes with strawberry syrup and sliced bananas. She’d laughed, but she knew. He’d told her he was probably the only guy in the Dakotas who didn’t enjoy a thick bison burger. He confessed his own illegal border crossing, when he’d taken the wrong direction on a hiking trail and ended up lost in the Canadian wilderness.

He said he’d never been in love.

That last point seemed to have surprised her as much as it had him. He hadn’t felt the admission coming...he’d just said it. And immediately wondered if that’s where this thing with her might have gone under other circumstances. But it was a ridiculous thought. Under other circumstances he would never have laid eyes on Evie James.

Beautiful Evie, who had broken into houses, had wild sex with a stranger in a hotel room, drained a shot of rum without so much as a cough, now stood baring a hell of a lot of cleavage in a sex club...and would soon hate him from her circulation desk at the front of a library back in Pelican Rapids, Minnesota.

That last part hurt the most.

Evie might not have been ready to see this as part of Vivian’s life, though at this point there was no absolute certainty that Vivian had ever stepped foot in the place. However, the pieces continued to congregate, too many tidbits to ignore. Beyond that, something about the place seemed familiar, and Ramiro struggled to find the connection.

Evie seemed to be handling it better than he, which was a giant red flag. His emotions had gotten in the way of his investigation. He swore under his breath.

Evie glanced toward him with alarm. He forced a smile, his attention snagged by a man in the hallway staring at them. The man wore a cardigan and khakis. After a moment, he shrugged and went on.

“Nice outfit,” Evie said. “Maybe there’s a room for office fetishes.”

Ramiro laughed.

Evie grinned.

They were still alone. “It sounds like your friend favored this room,” he said. “Want to give it a shot?”

She glanced from him to the violet walls, the upholstered pink thing that looked like an oversized ottoman, and the chains spaced along the wall. Overhead, the bare light bulb toggled from bright to a buzz and flash that suggested a weak connection. “What exactly am I agreeing to?” she asked.

He reached up and snugged the light bulb. The buzzing stopped. His fingertips burned.

“Handcuffs,” he said, gesturing needlessly toward the wall. “But where I can see you, so I can decide whether I approve of any new friends you might make.
