CHAPTER 9

Summer

I’m crazy.

I have to be.

Asa broke my heart into a thousand shattered pieces; I shouldn’t be forgiving him so easily. Despite this awareness, I’m still drawn to him. It’s unlike anything I’ve ever known before.

Men and boys have flirted with me for years; I’ve never looked at them twice. But Asa, as soon as he entered my atmosphere, I felt alive. Like we could be our own little world, and I want it so badly.

I haven’t overlooked the things he said to me; I’m not letting that go. But I’m giving him a chance to prove to me that he can be a good man. One who can love me so fiercely that the lines of obsession and jealousy blur.

Because I believe that’s what those reactions were now.

I’ve had a month to play everything over in my head, and the obsession began from the second he touched me. And the jealousy? It followed right after. Powerful, aggressive, and shameful.

Pulling up in front of Christmas’ house, I realize she’ll be pissed I’m letting Asa back in. I had asked to stay with her for a few days because I knew he was following me from work to home and back again. I could feel his penetrating stare. My body lit up. My heart shriveled.

As I exit my car, I see Chrissy in the window already, her glare icier than Elsa’s from Frozen. When Asa slips from his passenger side door, I rush over to him. “It’s probably better that you stay here.”

His jaw clenches, and I know he wants to fight me on this. “Whose house is this?”

“My sister Christmas.” His brow raises. “I…uhm…I needed a break…from you following me.” It’s his turn to look surprised.

“That so.” A cocky grin forms on his handsome face.

Rolling my eyes, I kiss his cheek and dart up to the house.

“I’ll kick his ass,” Christmas hisses as she slams the door shut behind me. “Why are you with him?” She’s always taken the ‘older sister’ job a little too seriously—even though she’s not even the oldest, Winter is.

“I wish you weren’t so reticent to love, Chrissy.” If anyone deserves love, it’s her. But I say that about all my sisters.

“Love isn’t the be-all and end-all of life, Summer.” I hear her teeth grinding as she follows me up to the guest bedroom.

“No, but it sure is nice company.” I smile at her to counteract her frown. She had her heart broken once; it burned her from the inside out. I feel sorry for her.

“You love him, Mer?” Her voice has softened as I pack my bag.

“I don’t know… I think I could. I think I could have a fulfilling life with him. I want to.” It’s why I’m so willing to accept his apology and allow him to show me that he’s not a complete jerk.

Crossing her arms, Christmas looks down before meeting my stare—oddly vulnerable. “I don’t want you hurt, Summer. I don’t want you to be like me, either.”

We share a private smile at her joke.
