CHAPTER 9
Summer
Iâm crazy.
I have to be.
Asa broke my heart into a thousand shattered pieces; I shouldnât be forgiving him so easily. Despite this awareness, Iâm still drawn to him. Itâs unlike anything Iâve ever known before.
Men and boys have flirted with me for years; Iâve never looked at them twice. But Asa, as soon as he entered my atmosphere, I felt alive. Like we could be our own little world, and I want it so badly.
I havenât overlooked the things he said to me; Iâm not letting that go. But Iâm giving him a chance to prove to me that he can be a good man. One who can love me so fiercely that the lines of obsession and jealousy blur.
Because I believe thatâs what those reactions were now.
Iâve had a month to play everything over in my head, and the obsession began from the second he touched me. And the jealousy? It followed right after. Powerful, aggressive, and shameful.
Pulling up in front of Christmasâ house, I realize sheâll be pissed Iâm letting Asa back in. I had asked to stay with her for a few days because I knew he was following me from work to home and back again. I could feel his penetrating stare. My body lit up. My heart shriveled.
As I exit my car, I see Chrissy in the window already, her glare icier than Elsaâs from Frozen. When Asa slips from his passenger side door, I rush over to him. âItâs probably better that you stay here.â
His jaw clenches, and I know he wants to fight me on this. âWhose house is this?â
âMy sister Christmas.â His brow raises. âIâ¦uhmâ¦I needed a breakâ¦from you following me.â Itâs his turn to look surprised.
âThat so.â A cocky grin forms on his handsome face.
Rolling my eyes, I kiss his cheek and dart up to the house.
âIâll kick his ass,â Christmas hisses as she slams the door shut behind me. âWhy are you with him?â Sheâs always taken the âolder sisterâ job a little too seriouslyâeven though sheâs not even the oldest, Winter is.
âI wish you werenât so reticent to love, Chrissy.â If anyone deserves love, itâs her. But I say that about all my sisters.
âLove isnât the be-all and end-all of life, Summer.â I hear her teeth grinding as she follows me up to the guest bedroom.
âNo, but it sure is nice company.â I smile at her to counteract her frown. She had her heart broken once; it burned her from the inside out. I feel sorry for her.
âYou love him, Mer?â Her voice has softened as I pack my bag.
âI donât know⦠I think I could. I think I could have a fulfilling life with him. I want to.â Itâs why Iâm so willing to accept his apology and allow him to show me that heâs not a complete jerk.
Crossing her arms, Christmas looks down before meeting my stareâoddly vulnerable. âI donât want you hurt, Summer. I donât want you to be like me, either.â
We share a private smile at her joke.
