After bathing and dressing for the day, Ella opened her door to head down to breakfast and leapt back in shock to find Nick just outside of it, his fist poised to knock. She felt her face go crimson at once.

Nick strode inside and shut the door behind him. “I thought to head you off at the pass,” he said, his voice tinged with wry humor. “If you had gone that red at the breakfast table, Mrs. Hudson would surely have suspected something. Best to get it out of the way before we must go down.”

Oh, Lord. She was going to sink straight through the floor and die of mortification.

“I wanted you to know that you have done nothing for which you ought to feel ashamed,” he said. “I was afraid that you would feel ashamed anyway. I have no regrets. I hope I have not given any to you.”

“No,” she managed, through a throat that felt as if it had been squeezed in a vise. She couldn’t regret the previous night, but it seemed impossible to speak with him casually when so recently his fingers had been—

Her face flamed anew.

Nick chuckled. “I’d wager I could guess what has just gone through your mind,” he said. “But I’ll be kind and not mention it.” He reached for her hand, drawing it into the warm clasp of his.

She managed a half-hearted laugh, mortified to the tips of her toes. “I behaved…very badly last night,” she said. “I hope you will not think less of me for it.”

“Of course I won’t think less of you,” he chided, rubbing his thumb over the back of her hand. “Nothing has changed, Ella. I do not expect more from you.”

She pressed the back of her hand against her burning cheek. “I cannot be so nonchalant,” she muttered. “I don’t know how you can not be embarrassed.”

He gave a one-shouldered shrug. “I expect I’ve got a smidge more experience than you have,” he said. “I suppose it’s only natural that you be a bit embarrassed. Perhaps this much.” He held his thumb and index finger a tiny sliver apart. “But only that much, as you’ve certainly not gained enough experience to merit more.”

She gaped at him, appalled.

A wicked glint came into his eyes. “But you should absolutely not let your mind dwell upon—”

“Oh, stop,” she cried, snatching her hand from his and turning her back on him, patting her burning face.

He chuckled, and she felt his lips buss the top of her head. “There, there,” he said. “I was only trying to help. If you get all of your blushes out now, surely there won’t be any left for the breakfast table.”

“I can’t go down,” she said, her voice strained. “Tell Mrs. Hudson I’m ill. I’ve got consumption. I’m at death’s door.”

“Come now, you’re braver than that,” he chided, amused.

“I’m not. I’m truly not.”

“Well, if you are bound and determined to be embarrassed, you ought to have a proper reason to be.” He crooked a finger, summoning her closer.
