Hours later I wake to a permanently darkened room, leaving me no concept of time or space. I must’ve slept hard and long, though, because my neck is killing me. I tilt my head from side to side, cracking bones, and I hear the sound of insistent beeping.

Damn.

I sit up and move over to check the panel of screens and find one lit up. I programmed the system to alert me if anyone approached the domicile. And there’s a fucker out there, standing on the front doorstep. A large male who looks like a government official.

He’s Hyrrokin, so not an actual member of the Mafia. Those fuckers are very xenophobic and only allow royal pigment Xylan into their ranks. This male could easily have been bought to do their dirty work though. I’m ninety-nine percent certain he’s here to check up on my female’s situation, with the added benefit of reporting back to the Mafia. And the guards at the gate to the community legally had to let him in, because he’s a government employee with probable cause. He’s the perfect mole. These assholes are smarter than I thought.

And Chloe is already opening the front door.

Godsdammit.

I race down three flights of stairs and hit the ground floor and pause, forcing myself to move with the silent stealth my training has taught me. My female has no idea I’m in the same room as her. I slide behind the door she’s opened and elongate my serrated claws. I’m ready to tear this male apart if he tries to hurt what is most important to me.

“My name is Borr Softsone of the Immigration Service. I am here to check on Chloe Chang, a human,” the male says with a surly tone as he waves a badge in front of my female. A badge she doesn’t even bother to check.

“Good morning. I’m the only human here,” my female responds brightly. “I guess that means I’m Chloe Chang,” she jokes.

My heart sings at the sound of her gentle voice. I love this female so much, it hurts. She’s unbearably sexy, standing there in the same type of shirt the females of my culture wear, which exposes the gleam of her soft, colorless skin. The skin I want so badly to lick and bite.

Her lack of horns, fangs or claws has never bothered me. She might appear defenseless, but I know my female has an inner strength forged of iron ore. She took care of her entire family for five long years, sacrificing herself for them. I admire the fact that she seems now to be moving forward with what she wants in life. I hope she wants me.

I fell in love with her over a vid screen, talking to her, hearing her voice and mainly seeing only her features. But now that I’ve also been exposed to her in real life—her scent and her perfectly fuckable body, I’m ten times more in love with her than before, if that’s possible.

And now she’s pregnant with my offspring.
