Chapter Six

A new sense of closeness grew between him and Bridget and for that, Finn was eternally grateful. The sense of intimacy that came from their night of lovemaking put him on a more secure footing. At some point, he would need to tell her the truth of the situation that the first marriage did not even happen. Finn was sure by the time he professed his love to her along with his vow to protect her at all costs...Bridget would see this was more than a marriage of convenience and together, they could take on the world.

Trust did not come easily to her and as the days progressed seeing her step out on her own even though she had the tremendous fear of boats and the ocean, Finn could see the woman he first met, with the wild hair and fire in her eyes. More often than not, she was above deck in the evenings and as the men played violin or bagpipes, she danced and laughed.

Bridget asked questions about Clan Dhai, his role and talked to all his family who respected her as their new Lady Davidson. He hoped the forward momentum their relationship had taken would progress even further.

The blue of the Caribbean Sea changed to the dark waters of the Atlantic Ocean. The wind had more of a definite chill for the time of the year and the waves were choppy while they skies held more dark clouds. The sails were filled with the big gusts of breezes and the course set towards home.

They were making great headway and Finn estimated they would be back on Scottish soil ahead of schedule. He was filled with anticipation of his mother meeting Bridget almost more than their landing claim on the Scottish Lands. No doubt, the gift was Queen Charlotte’s way of thumbing her nose at those in court who’d displeased her. Giving away titled lands to Bridget would make many of them burn with jealousy.

“Ship off the bough! Ship off the Bough!” one of his men in the crow’s next called out.

Finn strode quickly out of the bridge and stood in front of the wheel. “What kind of ship?”

“A Man-o-War! No cannons ports are open Finn, but they are on an intercept course!”

Douglas came bounding up the steps of the Baroque style ship. “We are out gunned if they catch up with us.”

“But we can outrun them.” Finn took the scope and moved to the back of the ship with Douglas and two others on his heels. “Raise the fore and aft sails, let’s make them work for their coin.”

“I see no pirate markings, the flag has a raven set in red,” Douglas commented.

“Blackmore’s people, he obviously had a ship lying in wait and got word of their failure,” Finn said grimly. “If they catch us, they will be in for a fight. I won’t let them take her.”

“None of us will,” Douglas vowed. “But there is a storm brewing ahead of us, we can change course, but it adds time to our voyage and put us in direct path of the man-o-war.
