I promised myself today that no matter what, I was going to tell Jay. We got up and had breakfast brought up to our room. As we were sitting there eating at the table Jay could tell that something was on my mind. He knew me too well. I could feel his eyes on me as he ate.

“You’ve been quiet all morning. What’s wrong?” He grabbed for my hand and lovingly smiled at me. “You mad ‘cause you ain’t get none this morning, too?” I couldn’t even smile at that. I really wished it was that simple. My heart, I could feel pounding in my ears when one word hadn’t been said yet. I was surprised he couldn’t feel my hand pulsating as he held it.

“Jay, there’s something I need to tell you, but I’m scared.”

He leaned back in his seat.

“Baby just tell me.”

My palms were getting sweaty as he still held my hand. Honestly, I hoped that he’d never let it go once I came clean. My eyes were set on his hand and concentrating on his touch as I spoke.

“… Before we met, when I was a junior in high school…” my throat muscles tightened. It was like the rest of the words were stuck.

“Baby what is it? And why you so afraid to tell me about something that happened before we met.” His thumb ran across the top of my hand so gently. I clung to every instant leading up to me finally coming clean. Before long, I could no longer hold back my tears. “It’s gon’ be alright. Stop crying.” I wiped my eyes with my free hand. He could tell it was something that I was struggling with. “Why you telling me this now anyway?”

“Babe, please let me get this out.”

“Okay. Talk to me,” he communicated.

Silence had overtaken me for a few seconds more before I blurted it out.

“… Jay, I had a baby by El—” he let my hand go as he stood up while interrupting me.

“What!” His fiery gaze was accompanied with fury now embedded on his face. “You fuckin’ what?” I wasn’t even finished the rest of my sentence before he was hopping up cutting me off. At this point, I was afraid to complete it, but he was waiting for me to continue so I said the rest just as fast.

“That-I-had-put-up-for-adoption.”

Those eyes that I loved and sparkled when I entered the room were now shooting at me like bullets. I felt them hitting me all over making me die a slow death. My fear of hurting him was now a reality. I saw it all over his handsome face that now shone hard. His jaws were clinched, and his temples pulsated. I got up and went beside him. I didn’t know how I should touch him, but I knew I wanted to. I struggled as I hesitated several times dipping my hands in different spots, trying to show some type of comfort but each attempt was blocked and rejected.

“Jaylen, baby say something to me… please!” Even though I was in his face he wouldn’t even look at me.
