Chapter Thirteen

“The first two victims had been living on the street. They were homeless and have no family. John Kent and Samuel Brown,” Lexi said to Alex and Lance staring at them from the iPad screen. They were on a Skype call.

“We believe they were murdered in a similar fashion as the third victim with the hope that the authorities would believe it was another random killing of a homeless guy,” Joanne interjected.

“Did you manage to identify him as well?" Lance asked.

“Yes.” Lexi paged through her notes and with a few clicks on her laptop, linked the victim's profile to their conversation. His identikit flashed on the small screen. “His name is Edward Delaware. We managed to establish that he was one of the engineers who worked on the development of the MOKV project.”

“But get this, he wasn’t employed by the Locklear Corporation where his body was found. He worked for Panther Co as a Senior Designing Engineer,” Joanne said in an excited voice. She’d been caught up by the challenge of finding the killers.

“Alex, can you find out what part of the project he was responsible for? It might give us a better idea of what they're looking for. I get the feeling this isn't about finding a hacker to decrypt the file anymore.”

Lance’s speculation drew a frown from the two women.

“You may be right. I'll get onto it.” Alex tapped a note on his iPad.

“What are you two thinking?” Lexi prodded, a little in the dark.

“Depending on what Delaware was responsible for, I suspect they might be gathering the design piece by piece. In the meantime, it might be a good idea to have security details on all the engineers that were involved in the design of the MOKV.”

“Goddammit, you’re right, Lance.” Alex frowned. “Do you think the Sixth Order might be undermining the Bratva? That they want the design for themselves?”

“It’s what I’m thinking, yes. If they manage to obtain the entire design and the Bratva manages to decrypt the files, the US will be held prisoner by both organizations.”

“And it will give them the advantage they’d been searching for. They’ll become more powerful than the mafia.”

“Were you able to find any trace DNA of the killers on any of the victims?” Lance asked.

“Not on the soft tissue but there are multiple deep cuts and stab wounds in the first two victims that went to the bone. Seeing as they have no family, do we have your permission to clean the bones, so Joanne can do a proper assessment?”

“Do you believe you might find anything, Joanne?” Alex asked.

“Anything is possible. Look, Alex, we found nothing on the bodies, but there might be some DNA embedded in the bones. If the one holding the knife perhaps cut himself or left a trace on the blade, we might just get lucky.”

“Very well, go ahead.”

Lexi and Joanne looked at each other. “We couldn’t find any information that Delaware had family. If you can confirm that, his bones might be a better option.
