Chapter Seven

The plan was for Hale, Reyna, and Barrick to transfer to the king of Excellia Four’s receiving room while Keir and Rand materialized in panther form just outside of the room so they could search the palace for Ryia.

Barrick worried that they wouldn’t be able to be sent to different parts of the palace at the same time but Keir assured him this was not the case. His transfer pod was very exact and could send someone through the eye of a needle if Keir wanted it to.

Barrick assured the younger man that was not something he cared to experience even to prove a point.

They transferred, having already made an appointment to meet with the king. The man had been very worried when he’d heard what his youngest son had done to Ryia and his advisor.

They rematerialized in front of the throne only to find Prince Eagert covered in what could only be his father’s blood. The king’s head sat innocuously on the table next to the royal throne.

“Commander! Hunter! Welcome to my kingdom. Forgive the mess, we are going through a change in management. Have a seat.” The prince or rather the king indicated the seats situated before his bloody throne.

Barrick bit back a growl of rage at the way the man was presenting himself. Reyna laid a calming hand on his arm and looked to her mate.

“Where is my daughter?” Hale asked in a deceptively calm tone.

Eagert smiled at Hale. “She is safe. I wouldn’t harm my greatest treasure. She might one day be my queen after all. Though I will have to convince the people it is in our best interest to allow her tainted blood to accede to the throne. They might not like the idea of an animal assuming power.”

“My daughter is no animal,” Hale said firmly. “Bring her to us so she can be returned to her rightful mate.”

“I wouldn’t advise you to anger me, hunter.” The king held up a small device. “This remote controls her collar. Every time you insult me or she disobeys me, I press this button and it shoots a current of electricity coursing through her body.” Eagert pressed the button and a panther’s howl of pain echoed through the palace.

Reyna gasped, her hand going to her throat as she heard her daughter’s cry of pain. Tears filled her eyes as she looked to her mate and Barrick, who were both fighting not to lose control.

“Please free my mate,” Barrick asked as he sank to his knees before the throne. “She is the very beat of my heart and I can’t stand to hear her in pain.”

Eagert smiled evilly at the man kneeling at his feet. “I will try to be benevolent but don’t anger me again.”

Keir and Rand moved stealthily through the palace, following the scent of their sister. When her howls of pain rent the air they began to run, eager to end the source of her torment.
