JONATHAN KNEW EXACTLY what he wanted and he knew it was wrong to think that Sadie seemed to fit the bill. She was the kind of person Jonathan would like to have in his life if he was ever ready to let someone in.

The way she looked at him made him want to believe that she wasn’t completely against being that person either. That was a crazy thought. A dangerous one at that.

The timer on the oven went off, breaking whatever spell he had fallen under. He grabbed the potholder and took out the potatoes like his mother had asked.

“Jonathan.” His mother sounded exasperated. “Please go back out there. Georgina did not come to dinner to listen to her father and Owen talk about the PGA tour. I’ve got these,” she said, pushing him toward the door.

“Okay, Mom. I’m going. I’m not going to get back together with Georgina Wilder, but I’ll go make conversation with her during dinner if it will make you happy.”

She stopped shoving him. “Why do you say that? You and Georgina used to be the best of friends as well as boyfriend and girlfriend. Sometimes you get a second chance to make things right.”

Did his mother and brother have a bet about who could marry him off before the other? First Owen with the Realtor, and now his mother with Georgina. “Mom, I love you, but you have no idea what you’re talking about right now. I am never, ever, ever getting back together with Georgina.”

“You’re being stubborn.”

That made him laugh. “I’m being stubborn? Since when is the goal of life to find me a girlfriend? Is this about trying to get me to stay? You figure if I fall in love with someone, I won’t leave and go back to Boston?”

His mom averted her eyes and folded her arms in front of her. “I want you to be happy.”

“You want me to be happy in Florida.”

She looked up at him, no longer chagrined. “I want you to stay because I hate thinking about you in Boston without anyone there to pull you out of this cocoon you have built around yourself.”

Cocoon? Since when did he have a cocoon? “I’m fine, Mom. You don’t have to worry about me.”

“Ha!” She dropped her arms and resumed pushing him toward the door. “You be sure to let me know how that works out for you when Riley grows up.”

It was fruitless to argue with her. All he could do was keep living his life the best way he could. If it made her worried, he couldn’t do anything about that.

He rejoined the dinner party and played nice with Georgina, who seemed equally annoyed by the setup as he did. He had a feeling she didn’t realize what she was walking into tonight either. Her children were with their dad for the next two weeks, and she was leaving for a short vacation to New York City with some friends of hers this weekend.

Dinner was served and the conversations dwindled a bit while everyone shoveled food in their mouths.
