October was upon them. Days were warm. Nights ran chilly. Hannah let the cool breeze wash over her as they aimed their buggy toward home.

“That was interesting,” Hannah said as the girls drifted to sleep behind them on the buggy ride home. Their bellies were full and they were worn out from playing.

“Was the service difficult to follow?”

“My High German is as good as my Pennsylvania Dutch,” she teased him.

“Ach, well, when you learn one, you will learn the other.” He’d said when. Had he meant to? Daniel was very careful with his words.

“You never told me you were raised in Chicago. Is that why Bryan thought this was such a good idea, because you once lived outside the Amish faith?” Daniel stiffened.

“Perhaps,” Daniel replied. He wasn’t going to make this easy on her, but Hannah knew how to be persistent.

“So what made you want to return and join the church?”

“I was born in the community, Hannah. But my father was unhappy here, and moved us away when I was young. I’m surprised anyone mentioned it. Feels like a very long time ago.” He gave the horse a tap, and Colt responded, picking up the pace.

Hannah could sense that he didn’t want to talk about his family or his time living in Chicago. “It’s just that...you know a lot about me, that I grew up in foster homes, lost a husband and now I’m hiding out in the middle of nowhere with you. But I had to find out from strangers who you are.” What was he afraid she would find out? “They believe I am an old girlfriend you just happened to run into. They think we have a history together.”

“Edith must have spread that information.”

“Well, spill it, mister. I can’t act like your wife if every bit of news about you is a surprise to me.”

“I lived in Chicago a long time ago, jah, but now I’m back here where I belong. There is nothing secretive about it,” Daniel said prickly.

When he brought the buggy to a stop in the drive, Hannah stepped down with ease. Nudging Catherine awake, she helped her eldest from the buggy before fetching M.J. and cradling her sleepy daughter against her Without a word, Daniel lifted Rosemary to his shoulder as he and Hannah glared at one another.

“I’m going to my room,” Catherine muttered as Hannah and Daniel moved through the foyer and headed toward the sitting room. They placed the two sleepy girls on opposite ends of the couch.

“She has a room?”

“Did you not say she could have one?”

“I thought they were still sleeping with you. I’m glad one of you is comfortable enough here,” he whispered in a snarky tone before heading out the door. Hannah followed. No way was he going to act mad at her when she was the one who was angry.

“I’m not the only one who isn’t comfortable. Who’s Michael?” Hannah demanded.

Daniel stopped in his tracks. “We aren’t talking about this now, Hannah. I agreed to offer you and your dochdern a safe place, food and shelter.
