Maeve tried to turn and flee the hall before Anise saw her, but she was far too slow with her hurt ankle to do so. As Alasdair shut his bedroom door, Anise’s gaze locked on Maeve standing in the shadows of the alcove. Maeve’s face burned with her embarrassment, and she wished to God she’d not ventured from her room to seek out some fresh air in the courtyard.

On second thought, if she hadn’t ventured out of her bedchamber, she would not have seen Anise coming out of Alasdair’s bedchamber, and her husband—that made her sneer—standing there with nary on but his braies. God above knew what they’d been doing. As Anise strode toward her with a smug, almost challenging look, Maeve brought herself to her full height and squared her shoulders. She refused to let this woman think the scene had caused her a moment’s fretting. More than anything, she was vexed at herself for allowing her pride to goad her into eliciting that kiss from Alasdair, and then actually letting herself consider that he may be honorable, as Lara had claimed. Maeve gritted her teeth. It wouldn’t surprise her one bit to learn Lara was in on a plan to deceive Maeve. The whole lot of MacRaes were liars!

“I told ye Alasdair wanted me,” Anise said, stopping in front of Maeve.

It took all Maeve’s willpower not to spit at the woman that she had no intention of keeping that dishonorable man as her husband. Instead, she forced herself to take a slow breath to calm her temper, and she considered carefully how she should respond. It seemed to her the best thing, the wisest thing, was to respond in a way that a woman intending to keep a husband would so she would not rouse any suspicion about trying to escape again. But Anise was likely the very last person who would stop her. In fact—Maeve nearly gasped in excitedness at the idea that had just come to her—Anise would surely be more than glad to help her escape if it meant the woman would get another chance to be Alasdair’s wife.

“Ye can have him,” Maeve said, switching courses from earlier. “I dunnae want him.”

The woman gave her a disbelieving, almost hostile look. “Dunnae try to play games with me,” Anise said. “He dunnae want ye.” Maeve opened her mouth to assure Anise she was not playing games, but the woman spoke again. “He contrived a whole plan to make ye think he does, but he dunnae. He persuaded his sister to aid him in convincing ye,” she said. “Lara told me how she was going to give ye a story that he followed ye years ago because he was besotted, and he kept yer ribbon all these years.” Anise snorted. “Lies. He followed ye to see if he could find a secret way into yer castle in case we needed to raid it, and it was Lara herself who kept that ribbon.”

Maeve’s cheeks and neck burned with the mortification of knowing she had partly—no, more than partly—believed Lara.
