When Kendrick summoned Flora to his study that morning, he felt more unsure of himself than he had for a long time. What would Flora do when she saw him? Would she be angry? Would she be embarrassed? Damn, he knew that he was. She had pushed him away, and he could not blame her.

As she was walking toward the study, Flora was trying to compose herself and failing miserably. The thought of his lips on hers was doing strange things to her body, and she was barely able to meet his eyes as she went through the door and confronted him. She curtsied, as she usually did. “Good morning, M’Laird,” she said politely before sitting down.

He frowned at her. “Let us not pretend that nothing happened, Flora,” he said grimly. “We both know that it did. Let us put it behind us if that is what you want.”

“It is—” she began, but whatever she was about to say was interrupted by a loud knocking on the door.

“Come in!” Kendrick called.
