âYe should get some sleep, Mr. MacGregor.â
Rory roused himself from the chair where heâd been dozing sporadically, waking himself up when his head nodded too far to one side or the other. He looked at Sima now, standing in the doorway to Julianaâs bedchamber, holding a candle.
âI could say the same for ye.â
She smiled, and he saw how tired she looked even in the light of the fire that had nearly gone out. He pushed himself out of the chair, gesturing for her to take it while he stoked the fire. He chided himself for letting it die down to near embers.
He glanced at the bed where Juliana lay. It didnât look like sheâd moved at all, but what if sheâd needed him? Some responsible caretaker he was if he couldnât even stay awake.
Sima had ignored his invitation to take the chair and gone over to check on Juliana. Both Greer and Aileen had come down with fevers, too, and he knew sheâd been on her feet since yesterday morning taking care of them. He followed quickly.
âHow is she?â
âAbout the same, I think.â Sima rearranged the sheets over Juliana. âHer night rail is wet with sweat from the fever, but I doona see a reason to change it. Sheâll only dampen the second one, and exposing her skin to the air might make it worse.â
âAre your daughters as bad off, too?â
âAye. The fever still runs high with both of them.â
âMayhap we need to get a physician?â
âThe closest one is in Fort Augustus.â Simaâs face set. âHe probably wouldna come with the storm, even if one of our men could get through.â
Rory felt a muscle twitch in his own jaw. Sima was right. The damn English dragoons would probably not deem it worthwhile to send their physician to help out a Scot. Although⦠âJuliana is nae only a Sassenach, sheâs sister to the Countess of Woodhaven. Would that nae make a difference?â
She shrugged. âIt might, if the weather were fair, but theyâll nae risk themselves or their horses in a blizzard.â
Rory knew how easy it was to get lost in those conditions. Someone could become disoriented and travel in circles, even with excellent tracking skills. Still, heâd take his chances and ride the seven or eight miles to the fort.
âI am going to go.â
âNoâ¦â
The sound had come from the bed. He and Sima both bent over Juliana. âAre ye awake?â
âNoâ¦do notâ¦â Her eyelids fluttered. âNoâ¦do not.â She took a shuddery breath and drifted back off to sleep.
Rory straightened. âI amââ
âNo.â This time the word came from Sima. âYe heard the lass. She doesna want ye to go.â
He looked back at Juliana, slumbering oblivious to the world again. âWe doona ken if she even heard us.â
âWhether she did or dinna, the message is still the same.â
âMessage?â
Sima gave him a level look. âA message. Mayhap from the fae if nae from her. Doona question from where, just heed the advice.â
âButâ¦â He couldnât totally dispute Simaâs theory when even heâd suspected the fae in having a hand in this whole debacle of rescuing Juliana.
