Chapter Fifteen
Lexi flashed Graeme a brilliant grin and grabbed the wheel of Grampsâ blue truck with both overeager slender hands.
His heart actually fluttered at her open, carefree expression, and he hollered at himself to get it togetherâan overly familiar sentiment since heâd found this beautiful young woman on the rocky beach just over a week ago.
He cleared his throat so he could get words out. âAre you sure you want to do this?â
Lexi nodded, those violet eyes bright. âAye. âTis like riding a horse, nay?â
He laughed. âWell, not at all, really. But I havenât ridden a horse since I was a kid.â
âI love ta ride,â she said, her words holding some palpable, nostalgic sense. âI miss Turadh somethinâ fierce.â Her gorgeous cheeks darkened, and she bit her bottom lip.
âTuradh?â Graeme repeated, likely slaughtering the pronunciation of the Gaelic name.
She remained quiet for a few seconds and she wouldnât look at him.
âLexi?â he ventured, tugging on her pale blue short-sleeve to keep things light.
She wore a blue and white baseball style tee, paired with the same dark jeans she lovedâand he loved her in. Her ass had been made for tight jeans.
He wanted her to smile again, like she had moments before, lively, excited and innocent.
Her throat worked when she finally spared him a glance, but no words were born.
âDid you remember something?â he asked gently.
Since heâd found her, she often had slips just like this. When heâd ask, she always denied any actual memory or shoved the idea away with things he assumed she thought heâd want to hear.
The date next week circled on the calendar loomedâthe appointment he was supposed to take her back to Dr. Guinn for a checkup. More than likely, the physician would want to proceed with an MRI.
The day heâd found her, Graeme wouldâve never allowed it, but now, it seemed like the thing to do, right?
She couldnât have endured it that day.
Could she now?
What had changed?
Maybe her subconscious coughed up random memories, but Lexi claimed she couldnât place it.
Something whispered in the back of his mind that he didnât know the whole truth, but he discarded it, as always when he latched onto the idea that she wasnât being honest with him.
He didnât like it. So he didnât want to face that she could be lying.
Lexi wasnât lying, was she?
Why would she have a reason to lie about amnesia? Did she not trust him, after everything theyâd gone through? After all their nights together?
The whole concept was silly.
âLexi?â Graeme prompted again when she still neglected to answer.
âI think I had a horse. Named Turadh.â Her cheeks were bright red, but at least she was looking at him.
âA horse? Thatâs great. What else can you recall?â
She shook her head, and her pretty eyes went hazy with unshed tears.
He sighed. He felt like an asshole again, although he shouldnât, and follow-up questions were only natural, but he still called himself a few choice names. Rushing things in her condition was never helpful.
âCâmere,â he whispered and tugged her into his arms.
