CHAPTER TWELVE

The man appeared to be in his early thirties, as his profile said, and he had short dishwater-blond hair and pale skin. In the football photo, he wore a shirt with the Leeds United logo on it. She clicked on the picture and found that it was also being used as a profile picture on a social media page for a man named Leon Evans. Leon was an IT manager for a medical device company in Leeds and posted several pictures of himself with his cat, Sir Cuddles.

The page made Leon appear considerably less frightening than he’d sounded in the letter about the coming revolution. Still, the letter was alarming, and if Leon was behind it, then she should probably alert the police.

She pulled out her phone and dialed the number for DC Worthington.

“Hello?” She heard low sounds and voices in the background, which meant he was probably out in public somewhere.

“Hello, Van. It’s Harriet Bailey.”

“Hi, Harriet. What’s going on?”

“Is there any news on Lord Beresford?” Maybe they’d located him and all of this was pointless anyway.

“We’re working on it,” Van said in a weary tone that told her he’d answered that exact question the same way many times recently. “We’re following up on all leads.”

That meant no. In that case, she would tell him what she’d learned.

“I had to go pick up some medicine for his dog today, so I went by Beresford Manor. While I was there, Mrs. Lewis told me about some letters that were sent by a member of a group called End Peerage Now.”

“Yes, she showed me the letters when we went by the house. We bagged them and are testing for fingerprints.”

Harriet took a deep breath. “The thing is, I was poking around on the group’s website, and I think I may have figured out who sent them.”

“You what?”

“His name is Leon Evans, and he’s an IT manager in Leeds.” Van was quiet, and in her nervousness, she rushed to fill the silence. “He has a cat.”

“Hang on. I’m writing this down,” he said. “Now, how did you figure this out?”

She recounted her thought process and the research she’d done, and Van let out a low whistle.

“That’s a lot of digging,” he said.

“Yes, well, I’m concerned,” she said. “Coleridge wants his master back.”

“Speaking of the dog, we’re trying to find the man who’s been hanging around your clinic, but we haven’t had much luck. We were hoping to get CCTV footage from the road that would show his license plate, but there aren’t many cameras out your way.”

Harriet was glad of that in general, though she wished for some at the current moment.

“We’ll check out this Leon bloke, and I’ll let you know if we find anything on the license plate or the lurker,” Van said. “Did you see the article in the paper this morning?”

“I did,” Harriet confirmed.

“That story didn’t come from us. We want to be careful about what gets out there, so please don’t talk to the press.”

Anxiety washed over her.
