Chapter Nineteen

The time for Harlan to return to work came sooner than either of them expected.

“Tomorrow?” Sam asked, sitting on the edge of the bed as Harlan paced back and forth across the bedroom, packing up his few belongings.

“An important client needs some extra security. I don’t have anyone I trust enough to hand this off to since Charlie is away.”

Charlie was Harlan’s business partner. Human, as far as Sam knew, very straightlaced, and uninterested in the business side of things. Sam hadn’t met him at all while he’d worked for Harlan because he’d been off on his honeymoon.

“I could come with you.”

“Not happening. While you’re in the Cove, you’re safe. Out there, you’re a target for your pack and maybe even for the Alpha Prime.”

“They won’t send anyone else after me when the others don’t come back.”

“Want to bet?” Harlan said, an eyebrow raised. He held up a hand when Sam opened his mouth to speak. “This is not a discussion or a debate. You’re safest right here.”

“But I want to stay with you.”

He felt like a petulant child as he said it, even though it was true.

“I want that too but it’s a no-go right now. We’ll have to make do with long-distance for the moment, but I’ll return as often as I can.”

It wasn’t enough but it was something.

“There’s still my dad’s research…”

Harlan’s expression shifted: hope, disappointment, and finally, resolve. “It’s too risky. Your pack are going to be antsy with your people missing.”

“But it doesn’t have to be me who goes to get it.”

“We can’t send a siren, the risk of exposure if we run into trouble is too high. And we can’t send one of the wolves, it would be even worse for them if they were caught. The Alpha Prime already has lots of reasons to want to get ahold of one of us. We’d be playing right into his hands.”

“But we’re not talking about the Alpha Prime. Just my pack. They’re clueless about sirens.”

“Don’t you think the Alpha Prime has been asking them where you are? Don’t you think your pack will have reported their people going missing? That’s going to have gotten his attention.”

It was a hard argument to disprove.

“Maybe.”

“It’s not worth the risk, Sam,” Harlan said again.

“I guess you’re right.” He stared at the carpet, twisting the edge of the blankets around in his fingers.

The siren came to stand in front of him, nudging his chin up.

“Stay safe, focus on connecting with your siren side. That’ll make you stronger, make us stronger.”

“I’ll try,” he promised, letting Harlan pull him to his feet and walking out with him to the front of the house.

“All going to plan, I’ll be back in a week’s time. If you need someone to talk to, I’m just at the end of the phone and Jonah’s a good listener.”

He nodded in acknowledgment, taking Harlan’s hands in his.

“Be safe. If the wolves from my pack told Boden where they were searching, more might come.”

Even though he knew he was contradicting himself, he couldn’t play down the danger to Harlan.
