Sitting in the bedroom, a thousand miles away from that memory, he could still see his uncle’s arms covered in the thick, black mud, the streaks marring his face too, and his once white shirt forever stained. The fear, the brisk handful of fear, smeared across his face in a mask the thickly muscled man simply couldn’t shake off as he stared up at Darby. It made him shiver as that memory crawled across his mind like a devilish millipede searching for something.

He could still easily see the newspaper headlines of how a young boy disappeared from the well, when he closed his eyes. Of course, there had been a great deal of speculation around Owen’s vanishing. Some thought that Darby simply made up the whole thing and that Owen was never down in the well. Still others thought that Owen had simply fallen into a sinkhole at the bottom of the well. This logic explained why the well had dried up and why Owen’s body disappeared. Another theory proclaimed Owen, taken captive, and eventually murdered. There were so many speculations, but those were the top three.

All of those stories had swirled around the town and coated almost everyone and everything he had known. It had been incredibly difficult to find a job in the small town. Someone would ask the obvious question about his last name and then suddenly the job wouldn’t be available any longer. The conversation always turned to Owen and the well.

Then, the most unexpected thing happened: he met someone. Her name was Sarah and she had been attending a conference in Miamisburg where he had finally found employment. The hair brushing across her shoulders and her brown eyes had drawn him in he had been immediately taken by her. The most fascinating thing to him however had been the fact that she didn’t know a single thing about him or his past. She didn’t know about the resilient penny or any of the half-truths and lies that always entangled him in town. She accepted him on face value. She had what was right in front of her, a good-looking man with a good solid job and no criminal record. She had no idea about any of the things lurking back in the small town, waiting for him.

The wedding had been small and quick, less than a dozen people attending in all. He hadn’t invited either of his parents and definitely not his grandmother. Life had been so good for a while.

He had wanted something un-poisoned by him, something untouched by the damn penny. Something that wouldn’t go horribly wrong because of him. He had foolishly thought that by Sarah not knowing anything about him or his family or his bad luck, that things would be different.

During that period, a huge weight lifted from him and his steps seemed lighter and unburdened. He had been able, for one of the few times in his life, to forget about things and just let go. He didn’t have to remember who he was and where he came from.
